Hillcrest is a gorgeous, historic little neighborhood in the lower, southern section of Pulaski Heights. It is often referred to as the “heart of Little Rock,” and when you walk the pedestrian-friendly streets, you can see why. Hillcrest was the first fully established suburb in Little Rock. In fact, it’s one of the first neighborhoods in Arkansas!
Much of Hillcrest’s charm is derived from the highly sought-after historic homes. The neighborhood is a charming mishmash of architectural styles ranging from the early 1900s to the 70s. Victorian, Queen Anne, Prairie, Bungalow, Craftsman… there’s a home for every decade and style. Many homes are located in protected historic districts or bear plaques designating them as historic homes.
Some of Arkansas’s best restaurants, coffee shops, and locally owned boutiques are located along Kavanaugh. Ciao Baci, Mylo Coffee, Rosalinda’s, and La Terrazza are locally-owned venues for dining, drinking and live music. There’s no better way to meet the locals and settle into your new neighborhood than visiting the local haunts.
A little further north up Kavanaugh from Hillcrest is the Heights. This district is located to the north of Cantrell Road and University Ave and runs east toward Downtown. The Heights’ homes are, on average, a little grander (and pricier) than in Hillcrest, but they are no less charming for it.
The Heights neighborhood is home to the Little Rock Country Club and you’re sure to see many residents driving golf carts to the grocery store or down the street. Restaurants, bars, boutiques, and bakeries line the street – you’ll never regret a stroll down the main strip to browse, snack, and window shop!
Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Choose an Apartment
We encourage you to shop around during your search for the perfect furnished apartment in Hillcrest or The Heights. And while you do that, go ahead and ask yourself these questions:
“Is everything being set up by the provider?”
From furniture and cleaning services to internet and utilities, everything should be included.
“Will my living space be clean and tidy on arrival?”
You should be able to walk in, unpack, and feel at home immediately.
“What about luxury amenities?”
High-speed internet, walk-in closets, swimming pools – you should have everything you need to be completely comfortable.
“Is the location convenient?”
When you’re traveling for work, your commute can make an enormous difference in your quality of life.
“Do I feel comfortable as soon as I walk through the door?”
Remember, corporate housing shouldn’t look or feel corporate – it should feel like your home away from home.
Things To Do In Hillcrest and the Heights
Visit the Farmer’s Market
The Hillcrest Farmers Market can be found in front of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church. Locally grown veggies, flowers, fruits, and cheese make up the wares of this charming little market – you’re sure to find something fresh and tasty for dinner!
The market is outdoors, but it moves inside the church in inclement weather. And it’s open year-round!
Open: 7 a.m.-noon Saturday (spring and summer)
8 a.m.-noon Saturday (fall and winter)
Enjoy Coffee and Pastries
The world runs on coffee and we know you’re no different! Luckily, in Hillcrest/Heights you have a smorgasbord of the best coffee shops in Arkansas! Mylo Coffee Co. is famous for its house-baked pastries and house-roasted coffee. Boulevard Bread Co. bakes fresh bread daily and also offers a sinful selection of muffins and pastries. Snap up a baguette (they go fast!) and some gruyere from their cured meat and cheese cooler, and start your day off the European way!
And if you happen to be one of those rare people who doesn’t love coffee, try Abbi’s Teas and Things. This precious little teahouse serves a mind-boggling array of teas – and there are always little pastries and snacks to go with it!
Shop During Third Thursday
Every month, on the third Thursday, stores are open until 8 p.m. in the Heights. Along with extended hours, there are also open houses from local businesses with music, snacks, and drinks. Sip and snack while you shop the sales and specials!
Harvestfest is a fall festival put on by the Hillcrest Merchants Association in October (usually). This celebration of local culture brings friends and families together to appreciate the season with food trucks, fashion shows, live music, and local crafts. Activities start around 7:30 a.m. and last until about 8 p.m. The east stage hosts live music and local acts all day.
Bike and Hike at Allsopp Park
If you love the outdoors, you’re going to adore Allsopp Park. Historically, it was once the location of a pedestrian bridge that allowed Hillcrest residents to get to and from the streetcar stop. Today, Allsopp Park boasts a 5-mile loop perfect for hiking and biking. The park also has picnic tables, a pavilion, restrooms, a playground, paved trails, and multiple tennis courts. And it’s dog-friendly so bring your best friend out to play! You’re sure to meet like-minded people along the way.
