How to Get to Know Your New City

So you have found your dream job and signed a lease on your dream apartment, now it’s time to get to know your new city! Whether you are moving to Central Arkansas or Northwest Arkansas, this guide will help you feel like you’ve known this city all your life. At Arkansas Suites, we agree that it is exciting to start fresh in a new city but we also know it can be intimidating. Do not fret, we are here to help you!

Taking a Leap

When you move from city to city, it can be hard to feel at home. You may feel like you’re living out of a suitcase and just bouncing around from one temporary place to another. How will you know if you’ll like the next place you move to and where do you find the places that the locals go whenever all you can seem to find is the tourist attractions for your city.

Whether you are worried about the people you will meet, the apartments you will live in, or the jobs that are available to you, our guide is going to help you start.

Live Like a Local

Tourist attractions can be fun, such as Magic Springs in Central Arkansas or Crystal Bridges in Northwest Arkansas. However, you won’t really know what a city can offer you until you experience the places that only the locals know about. You have to get away from the main attractions in town sometimes and start to ask people where their favorite places are to eat, go dancing, hang out with friends, grab a drink, or see the best views. Whenever I go into a new town I try to ask waitresses, or my Uber drivers where their favorite local hangouts are. Or I may even ask someone random on the street where they like to shop. There is nothing better than local food, and small shopping experiences!

Travel Around the City

Your GPS may tell you that you are 20 minutes away from a destination, but you will never really know how easy or difficult it is to get around your city than by just experiencing it for yourself. Take a walk around your new neighborhood and see if there are local public transportation stops, how safe it is to walk in certain areas, and if it is easy to get around from place to place.

Walk as much as you can, and whenever you take public transportation, make a pro / con list of public transportation vs driving your own vehicle around. And lastly, as annoying as it may be, drive straight into rush hour traffic and see what it is like. It is likely that you will be stuck in it a time or two so it is best to know what you are in for.

Talk to a Friend of a Friend

They say that everyone has a connection to someone by six degrees of separation. So no matter where you move to, you know somebody who knows someone, who lives in your new city. Luckily we live in the day and age of social media and it is easier than ever to connect with other people! Before your move, reach out to your friends and ask if they know anybody that lives in the new area and have them get you in contact with them. What better way to get to know your city than through the eyes of a local. And it doesn’t hurt to make a friend while you’re at it.

Be Adventurous

Moving to a new city is scary and you may think that you need to have everything planned out, keep things incredibly organized, and know where you will be going every day for the next however long. Allow yourself to be adventurous for a day and not stick to what you know about the city or what you have researched. Go try new things, meet new people, and see how the city makes you feel. If you allow yourself to get outside of your comfort zone, you may be surprised what you will find.
